Primary Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Accountabilities (*Essential Functions):

The following functions are performed under the direct supervision and oversight of the employee’s assigned engineering supervisor:

  • Technical Knowledge: Very good understanding of firearms products and/or ammunition processes and related advanced engineering designs/function. Master of technology related to product area and considered an expert in specific areas. Fully capable of systems level engineering. Capable of developing new technology to meet existing problems. Understands specific manufacturing processes unique to ROC across a wide range of VSO areas.
  • Tool Usage: Comfortable with and able to use advanced tools, including Design of Experiments and CAE (Finite Element Analysis, Simulation) to meet objectives - anticipate and/or identify interactions. Able to critically assess results and challenge analyses. Proficient in creating DFMEAs and VA-VE activities. Capable of developing new models/uses for existing tools and methods - expert application and full utilization of methods. Proficient in statistical techniques and analysis
  • Indicators: Record of delivering several innovative, high quality designs from scratch. Quick to spot design weaknesses or potential quality concerns based on advanced data analysis. Black belt level understanding of statistical and lean methods Has created lab and test standards improving efficiency and quality . Evaluates findings to develop new concepts, products, equipment or processes. Key expert supporting multiple design reviews.

    Scope of Responsibility: Typical role is to support several teams in a specific discipline or technical lead on one or more major programs. Key resource for solving complex problems on multiple applications: Handles a wide range of difficult problems. Errors can cause significant program delays and danger of missing major committed financial objectives for the business. Work is assigned in terms of program objectives, relative priorities and critical areas. Guidance provided by P&:L platform lead. Can be depended on to provide Prgm Mgr. and P&L Leadership with rational design approaches.

    Leadership: Has strong work ethic, respects time of others, prompt, role model for safe working conditions and maintains a clean workplace. Able to listen to cross functional teammates and get buy-in for proposed technical direction or approach through process discipline and tool use. Leads by example through action and seeks the respect of others through achieving objectives the right way.

    Communication and Collaboration: Capable of providing expert feedback and design analysis in a positive and effective manner. Often called upon to present to leadership and other functions. Represents ROC in a positive manner with suppliers and customers and supports negotiations where required.

Displays a bias for action and performance in the work area. Role model for ROC’s values and process discipline. Identifies mentoring needs and plans for skill transfer and development. Mentors less experienced colleagues.

    Level of Review Work results reviewed at program milestones and gate reviews. Responsible for innovation within process guidelines to meet customer objectives.

    Qualifications, Educational Skills and Experience:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.     BS/MS degree in Engineering or Science (i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials engineering, Physics) from a four year accredited or nationally recognized college or university and 7 - 15 years relevant experience; PhD with 5 - 10 yrs experience; Firearms and ammunition experience a plus.

    Ability to read work and interpret instructions in English. Ability to record observations and keep records of data as instructed.

    Ability to perform advanced mathematical operations such as exponents, logarithms and apply those methods to analyses involving frequency distributions, reliability, analysis of variance and factor analysis.

    Proficiency with CAD/CAM, finite element analysis, mechanical simulation or aptitude for learning. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite necessary. Program management skills a plus.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, explosives, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Personal protective equipment to limit exposure to these environments will be provided.

    Employees may encounter hazardous wastes during the course of their work. Hazardous wastes are to be handled appropriately; including applicable use of PPE, placement into compatible containers, container labeling and marking; etc. Additionally, wastes may need to be transported to/from satellite accumulation areas to 90-day accumulation area; via dolly, forklift, etc. All employees working with, handling, or managing hazardous wastes will receive annual RCRA training. Those employees preparing waste for shipment will receive additional trainings (DOT).
