The successful candidate for this position may be hired at a level II or level III depending upon their education and experience.

LEVEL II: Perform journeyman level work installing, modifying, maintaining, repairing and overhauling refrigeration equipment, environmental boxes and air conditioning.

LEVEL III: Perform journeyman level maintenance work to include commercial refrigeration, natural gas heating systems, low pressure steam, hot water boilers, chill water systems, and high and pressure cooling systems.

Essential Job Duties

•Monitors/maintains HVAC systems; •Repairs, replace, or updates equipment as required; •Maintains records of parts, time, material expended; •Submits estimates, requests for work assignments; •Coordinates repairs and outages to be minimally disruptive; •Coordinates projects involving outside contractors; •Monitors parts inventory; •Handles refrigerants and oil according to EPA standards; •Maintains cleanliness of work area; •Adheres to trade safety and work practice; •Assists HVAC controls specialist as needed; •Operate, maintains, and repairs chilled water systems; •Maintains gas-fired equipment and boilers; •Services and repairs compressed air systems; •Maintains and repairs commercial kitchen equipment;
•Performs other duties as assigned.
• Perform preventive maintenance of campus HVAC/ Refrigeration systems; • Maintains records of supplies, time and materials expended; • Coordinates with trades and building schedules; • Coordinates projects involving outside contractors; • Monitor inventory; • Submits estimates; • Handles refrigerants/oil according to EPA standards/safety; • Maintains and monitors work space and quality control; • Supports other skilled trades; • Manages installation of new systems – HVAC/refrigeration; • Operates, monitors, maintains and repairs chilled water systems; • Repairs and maintains commercial refrigeration systems; • Replaces/repairs compressed air systems; • Repairs pneumatic, electronic digital HVAC controls; • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties

Other duties as assigned to support or supplement fellow crafts. Level III – maintain availability for after hours call-ins.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

•Strong mechanical aptitude; •Knowledge of propane and natural gas trade; •Ability to read blueprints and wiring diagrams; •Electrical knowledge; •Control principles safety and hazard training; •Skilled in the use of tools and equipment; •Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.

• Ability to interpret drawings and schematics; • Ability to communicate with people in all functions; • Knowledge of contacts to aid in problem solving; • Knowledge and skill to operate various HVAC testing and repair equipment; • Ability to install complete HVAC systems ranging from small residential to large commercial.

Minimum Qualifications

•High school diploma or equivalent required;
•Two years mechanical or technical course work in HVAC and refrigeration required; •Minimum of five years of experience/education combination in HVAC repair and maintenance, seven years preferred.

•Completion of high school/equivalent is required; • Completion of an associate’s degree in a related field is preferred; • At least seven years of experience required.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

•Journeyman gasfitter license required; •Universal Refrigerant Certification (EPA 608) required; •Valid driver’s license required.

• Plumbing/ Gas Fitter’s Journeyman License is preferred; • Freon Reclaim Level III Certificate is required; •Valid driver’s license required.
